Discussion:
Cannot change default Insert Attachment folder
(too old to reply)

Using OE6 and 98SE.

I have amended the registry settings so that the OE "Insert Attachment"
box now displays my preferred folders/files, rather than the default "My
Documents" folder/files. However, the "Look in:" box still displays "My
Documents".

I have searched without success for another setting that could be
causing this problem and wonder if anybody could offer any suitable
suggestions.

TIA

Possibly that's related to this bug:

Set the "Save Attachment" Default in OE (Line 242)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Get
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/oesaveas_all.vbs
or
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/XP_OESaveAttPath.exe

*Note: for 9x systems, and possibly Win2K, you need the VB6 runtimes
installed to use the EXE version.

Another option is to create a short cut to the desired folder in
Windows, then open that folder and use drag-and-drop to attach the files
to the message.

Thanks for all that info. I'm a bit reluctant to run that registry
tweak because a) my "Save Attachments" is working fine, it's only the
"Insert attachments" that is the problem and I can't find a registry key
for that b) the tweak specifically says it's for XP and I'm running
98SE and c) I can't see in advance what it's going to do.
But maybe, I'll give it a go just for the hell of it!!! I'll also check
out those other links. Thanks for your help.

Just to update. I did run the XP registry tweak and it did work in 98SE
and it did what it was intended to do, i.e. set the "Save attachment
path". Unfortunately it didn't provide the solution to my problem,
which relates to the *Insert* attachment path.

My OE remembers the insert path, but only during a session. Shut OE down
and it forgets, unlike IE.

The point is that I *have* got OE to remember my preferred path but
whilst it displays my preferred folders and files in the main box, the
"Look in:" box above still displays "My Documents" on every new session.

If I manually select a different folder and insert a file, that folder
then shows in the "Look in:" box during that OE session (unless I select
another folder). On each new OE session however, whilst my chosen
folders/files
display correctly in the main box of "Insert Attachment", the "Look in:"
box goes back to displaying "My Documents". It works fine but looks a
bit confusing!

looks a bit confusing!
I've found the solution by a lot of trial and error.
When I changed the registry keys (see below) from "C:\" to "C:\*.*" I
noticed that if I ran OE direct from Start > Programs, on each new OE
session, the "Look in:" box displayed "My Documents". However, if I
called OE from Mailwasher or from OE Quotefix, the "Look In:" box then
displayed the folder of that calling application. In every case,
regardless of which folder appeared in the "Look in:" box, the folders
and files on C:\ were displayed in the main box (which is what I want).

On the shortcut properties for OE, Mailwasher & OE Quotefix, I changed
the "Start in" value to "C:\" and now OE always displays C:\ in the
"Look in:" box with the required folders and files displayed in the box
underneath. I am now feeling quite happy and may well treat myself to a
beer!
