os: xp home.sound in internet explorer 7 quit working, sound works fine on
every thing else

When you post your problem there, be specific. Such as some web sites
where you expect sound but don't hear it.

Also check your volume control (speaker icon in the lower right hand
corner) to make sure that some types of sound aren't set to mute or too
low. Your sound "card" handles different types of play back with
independent volume controls.
