Hi - I am getting duplicates of some of my mail. My server says its not
from their end, that it is Outlook Express.

Can any one suggest anything?

If it's just some of the mail the problem is probably on the other end.

It is only some of the mail, but my service provider has done a check, and
said in part "I'm having a look at your duplicate email problem. As already
mentioned, your first example of this duplication appears to be your email
client (Outlook Express) either downloading the same message multiple times
or presenting the same message to you multiple times."

They suggested I use IMAP instead of POP3, which I tried, but did not like.

It seems that if the messages have the same ID number then they are
duplicates, and that is what these messages are.

Pop3uidl.dbx keeps track of what has been downloaded and may have become
corrupt. If you delete Pop3uidl.dbx (while OE is closed) it will once again
download everything still on the server, but then it will build a new
Pop3uidl.dbx and keep track of what has already been downloaded.

Frank, would I lose my current mail if I deleted Pop3uidl.dbx? I have
quite a few emails I want to keep.

No. The only bad effect would be downloading some more duplicates (once).

I closed down OE, and I copied the pop3uidl.dbx over to do a search - and
nothing appeared. I looked in the OE file, and there were no .dbx files
there even - in fact there was only one .dbx file in my whole system, quite
unrelated, and from another program.

What now?

Location of DBX files:
In OE go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder
With Win2K, WinXP or Win2K3 you will have to set Windows Explorer and/or
Search to Show hidden files and folders.

I should have told you I was using XP Home Edition and OE 6.
I went into OE - tools-options mainteance-store folder - and this was
showing C:\Documents and Settings\Judy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{29E5A1FD-3FF8-4C13-A2E1-9648BFD411D2}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

I also went into W/explorer and set it to show hidden files and folders.

Still dont know quite what to do next, as I did another search for
pop3uidl.dbx and it showed nothing.

You have to set Search to Search hiiden files and folders:
Search | All files and folders | More Advanced options | Search all files
and folders.
As long as you were in Windows Explorer why didn't you just do it there?

I have now done the more advanced options, search all files and folders, and
the file is definitely not there.

In OE go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and write down the
location of OE's data store. Go there with Windows Explorer and write down
the list of DBX files and put that list in your reply.

I did everything you said Frank, went to Tools-options-maintenance-store
folder (this is what was there) ------> C:\Documents and
Settings\Judy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{29E5A1FD-3FF8-4C13-A2E1-9648BFD411D2}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express.

I then went to Windows explorer, and found C:\Documents and
Settings\Judy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{29E5A1FD-3FF8-4C13-A2E1-9648BFD411D2} - but that was as
far as it went, the folder was empty. Nothing about Microsoft\Outlook
Express, let alone any DBX files (I had previously said the only dbx files
on my system were 2 unrelated ones from a totall different program)

Then as far as I understand, OE cannot work at all. I give up.

Frank I did a search for "inbox" and 2 files appears with the same
information on that I told you about before. e.g. C:\Documents and
Settings\Judy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{29E5A1FD-3FF8-4C13-A2E1-9648BFD411D2}\Microsoft\Outlook

Both these files are not connected to anything, and thats why they werent
being picked up before.

The top one is called Hotmail - Inbox.dbx and the one below is called
Inbox.dbx
