Hi,

Bottom left (just above "Start" button) for some groups reads "6,000 (or
whatever) message(s), 150 unread, 22,000 not downloaded".

I imagine things might go a little quicker if I could clear out the old
messages which I 've already reviewed. How do I do that? --And if there are
messages I have marked "Watch message" will I lose those?

Thanks,
Dean

Does catchup download the messages or just ignore them?

It ignores them. The point of Catch-up is avoid having to download messages that you
never intend to read.

I use this rule, applied manually to newsgroups that get slow:

This rule is currently turned off.
Where the message was sent more than 20 days ago
Delete it

Yes, you will lose Watched messages more than 25 days old.
