I use outlook express for all email and newsgroups.
I also use briefcase to synchronize files between my desktop and notebook.
Is there a way I can synchronize my email messages in the same way?

Not as easy as you would like.

You can also get to the Outlook Express newsgroups via this web site:

There select Internet Explorer, then Outlook Express.

One way is to go to Tools | Accounts | <double click the account> | Advanced
and set it to leave messages on the server for a sufficient number of days
for each to download them. Don't leave then on forever or your mailbox on
the server will fill up and you will be unable to receive new messages.

Another way would be to use IMAP instead of POP3.
